Domaine Armand Rousseau 1er Cru Clos St Jacques 2016 (Gevrey-Chambertin)

"The 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru is blessed with a bouquet of real pedigree: very complex mixture of red and black brambly fruit, sous-bois, crushed stone and rose petal aromas. The harmony and delineation is outstanding. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, pliant tannins that lend this Clos Saint-Jacques symmetry and poise. Fresh and vibrant, it never relinquishes any of its breeding and tension. The finish is persistent and utterly captivating. Fabulous. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting." – Neal Martin, Oct 2019.

A statue of Saint Jacques was unearthed in this vineyard, which was then dedicated to the saint. It now boasts chapel that lies on one of the many pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela.

The vineyard is divided into five vertical strips belonging to five different domains. Domaine Rousseau owns one third of the total area of the Clos.

Domaine Armand Rousseau’s holding of 5.5 acres accounts for 40% of the total acreage of this famed Premier Cru, which many believe is of Grand Cru quality and one of the finest Premier Cru vineyards in the entire Côte d’Or. The walled vineyard sits just up the hillside from the village, well within site of the domaine. Exposure is to the east allowing the vines to soak up the morning sun.
